How to Choose an Assisted Living Home in Tucson: A 12-Question Checklist
October 24, 2026
Bring this checklist on every tour, whether it's a 5-bed group home or a 150-apartment community.
Before the tour
- Is the home licensed? Search the Arizona Department of Health Services’ AZ Care Check site for the license and available inspection findings. 1
- What level of care is it licensed for? Arizona’s assisted living rules distinguish supervisory, personal and directed care services. Confirm the facility’s authorized services and whether they match your loved one’s needs. 2
- Do they accept ALTCS? If your loved one qualifies for Arizona Long Term Care System benefits, ask which plans the home contracts with and confirm coverage with the plan before moving in. Eligibility includes financial requirements and a need for nursing-facility-level care; eligible people may receive services in assisted living. 2
During the tour
- How many caregivers are awake overnight?
- Who gives medications, and how are they logged?
- What does a typical day look like?
- Can residents keep their own doctors?
- How are meals planned for special diets?
- How do they handle falls and hospital visits?
Money questions
- What is included in the monthly rate, and what costs extra?
- How much notice is required to raise rates?
- What happens if care needs change — will they need to move?
Finally, read what other families say, but treat reviews as one piece of the picture—not a substitute for licensing records, a visit and direct questions.
